The SMT Engineer is responsible for programming, setup, operation, and troubleshooting of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production lines.
The role ensures optimal machine performance, high-quality output, and efficient production flow in accordance with company standards.
This position requires strong technical knowledge in SMT processes, equipment, and programming.
Key Responsibilities:
SMT Machine Programming & Setup
- Prepare and create SMT machine programs (placement data, feeders, and offsets) according to PCB design and product specifications.
- Perform SMT line setup including stencil printer, pick & place machine, and reflow oven configuration.
- Conduct first article inspection (FAI) and verify setup accuracy before mass production.
- Continuously improve setup efficiency and minimize changeover time.
Process Control & Optimization
- Monitor SMT line performance and optimize parameters for quality, yield, and throughput.
- Analyze production data to identify causes of downtime, mispicks, or defects, and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure process control in solder paste printing, placement accuracy, and reflow soldering profiles.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and coordinate with engineering and QA for sample runs.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Troubleshoot and repair machine errors, feeder issues, and alignment problems during production.
- Collaborate with technicians for preventive maintenance (PM) and calibration of SMT equipment.
- Maintain maintenance and process records for audit and traceability.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with IPC-A-610 and company quality standards.
- Support root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective & preventive actions (CAPA) for SMT process defects.
- Enforce ESD control and safety practices in the SMT area.
Team & Documentation
- Train and guide SMT operators and technicians on correct setup, operation, and troubleshooting methods.
- Prepare and maintain process documentation, setup sheets, and quality inspection checklists.
- Support production meetings with data reporting and improvement updates.

- Line downtime < 3%
- On-time setup completion and NPI readiness

Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or equivalent field.
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of working experience in SMT / PCBA manufacturing industry.
- Hands-on experience in SMT machine programming, troubleshooting, and line setup is required.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficient in SMT programming software (e.g., Yamaha, Panasonic, Fuji, etc.).
- Knowledge of solder paste printing, reflow profiling, AOI systems, and ESD handling.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Able to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia (Mandarin an advantage).
